FCRP has some of the most diverse and extensive bird habitat in El Paso County. We will search for fall migrants and residents including waterfowl\, shorebirds\, raptors\, and songbirds. Participants from the Denver region meet at Castle Rock at 5:30\, and participants from the Colorado Springs area can meet at 6:45 at the Nature Center. This trip is rated moderate for duration\, however we’ll be mostly on improved trails. Wear layers and comfortable shoes or boots\, hat\, sunscreen and whatever else keeps you comfortable. Bring water and snacks for the day. Leaders will have a scope\, bring your binoculars and a camera if you wish. Plan to walk 2 1/2 – 3 1/2 miles. During our trip we will venture across county lines to scour vast prairie\, woodlands\, open water\, wetlands\, and riparian areas for a very wide variety of birds\, including wonderful migrants. Bring snacks\, lunch\, and lots of water. We will be in shade much of the time\, but still plan for sun protection. Porta-potties will be nearby half of the time. Of course\, bring your favorite birding gear like binoculars and a camera. (Don’t have binoculars? No problem – the trip leader can bring you some!) Wear comfortable walking shoes – we may walk 3 miles at a very slow birder’s pace. Our terrain can be uneven but mostly flat. Long pants are recommended. You’ll want to pack yourself drinks\, snacks\, and lunch. \nWe will meet in Fountain\, CO by 5:30 a.m. to carpool/caravan east to Chico. DESCRIPTION:Join Pat Paternostro and Aiken Audubon for a fall bird walk on Saturday\, October 3rd at Kettle Lakes.\n\nWe will look for lingering fall migrants and hope to welcome some returning winter species\, waterfowl\, and raptors. This is a great birding location with diverse ecosystems that offer a variety of birds. The walk will last approximately 3 hours and is fairly easy with just a few hills and slight inclines. There are a few porta-potties on site.\n\nWe will meet at the Kettle Creek Lakes parking lot. From I-25 take exit 150 (North Academy) and go west. Drive towards the south Academy entrance and take the first right. There is no street sign but you turn right at the Pass & Registration building and go to the end of the road. Let loose in New York City’s Central Park by a misguided aristocrat\, the starlings were supposed to help curb insect outbreaks and add to the tuneful choir of other songbirds. Rather than staying put\, the dark and speckled starlings marched across the continent like a conquering army. In less than sixty years\, they were in every state in the contiguous United States and their numbers topped two hundred million. Cities came under siege; crops buckled beneath their weight. Public sentiment quickly soured. \nA bitter\, baffling\, and sometimes comical war on starlings ensued. Weapons included dynamite\, guns\, bounties\, fake owls\, real owls\, rubber snakes\, balloons\, itching powder\, and greased building ledges. Still\, artists and scientists marveled at their undulating aerial formations\, which seemed equal parts poetry and mathematics. Keen listeners recognized the starling as one of the world’s great vocal mimics\, imitating everything from fellow birds and cell phones to barking dogs\, car alarms\, and TV commercials. And then there were their undeniable skills of adaptation and survival. No tricks here\, just the treat of enjoying an afternoon of birding with others! \nJoin us for a leisurely stroll through the evergreens on Halloween afternoon.\nWe’ll spend our time scanning the trees and grounds for the usual suspects and may possibly see a surprise Red Crossbill or Wild Turkey.
