SUMMARY:Blackbird Friday Field Trip | Big Johnson Reservoir & Fountain Creek Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:**Notice: Rescheduled to Sunday\, Nov 26 due to weather.** Big Johnson is the best reservoir in the Colorado Springs area\, and during migration and winter is teeming with ducks of many species\, gulls\, and sometimes loons and grebes. We’ll scan the lake for waterfowl and raptors\, and then take a short walk to look and listen for longspurs and scaled quail in the Bluestem Prairie Open Space. Afterwards we’ll head a few miles down the road to Fountain Creek Nature Center and get closer looks at waterfowl\, American Dippers\, various sparrows and any other recent arrivals that might be around. Total field trip time will be approximately 4-5 hours. There are no restrooms at Big Johnson\, but restrooms are available at Fountain Creek Nature Center. \nThis is a joint trip with Denver Field Ornithologists. \nFREE REGISTRATION HERE

She first started working with Audubon after attending the Audubon Convention in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, in 2019. DESCRIPTION:Want to figure out which hawk that is in your backyard?  How about the hawk along the highway?\nColorado has 18 non-rare species of diurnal raptors. Join us in January\, along with Debbie Barnes as she presents an information-packed program explaining how to identify Colorado’s eagles\, hawks\, falcons and kites. Debbie has been studying the identification of these birds for ten years and has developed a program to help separate the various species. Join us and learn the tips that will greatly improve your skills. \nDebbie has been birding and photographing birds for over twenty years.  In addition\, she volunteers for Colorado State Parks\, Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas II and several Christmas Bird Counts. She has taught raptor identification classes at Cheyenne Mountain State Park\, spoken at meetings of Colorado State Parks Raptor Monitors and taught a birding class at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.  She has written a bird guide for Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and Cheyenne Mountain State Park.  She is currently writing a guide for Mueller State Park.  She served for several years on the board of Aiken Audubon and is currently serving on the Field Trip board for Colorado Field Ornithologists. \n\nThis will be an in-person meeting (and broadcast on Zoom) held at the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Office located at 4255 Sinton Road 80907. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second of four\, in a new series of winter bird walks focusing on winter waterfowl. \nThis series focuses on helping developing birders learn how to identify winter waterfowl\, but all levels of expertise are welcome. If you’re a developing birder\, please join us. This will be a great opportunity to learn together. \nThis is a special joint trip with Denver Field Ornithologists to the Pueblo area! \nThe day will start with donuts at Daylight Donuts in Pueblo. We will then enjoy birding along the Arkansas River between The Nature & Wildlife Discovery Center and Lake Pueblo. Ducks are at the top of our list for the day\, and we will also be looking for a variety of sparrows\, phoebes\, wrens\, woodpeckers\, hawks and more. This is a good area to discover something unusual along the river and in the nearby thickets. Manitou Lake is the best birding area in Teller County because it features a diversity of habitats\, including wetlands that are not a common habitat type in the county. A bonus boardwalk provides easy access through the wetland. In addition\, the moving water below the spillway provides open water that attracts birds in winter.\n$10 vehicle access\, binoculars suggested. Let Jessica know if you need to borrow a pair of binoculars.\n– We will coordinate a carpool/caravan from Colorado Springs. After we arrive we will drive between 4 or 5 birding locations\, all within Lake Pueblo State Park. It’s recommended that cars have a Colorado State Park Pass\, otherwise\, be prepared to purchase a daily pass ($10) per vehicle.\n– Difficulty: Easy. SUMMARY:Aiken Monthly Meeting February 2024 | High Altitude Finches
DESCRIPTION:Rosy & Redpoll Finches are a great topic for our February monthly meeting as they blend in well with Valentine hearts…and they don’t mind the snow. \nJoin us this month for an in-depth presentation on The role of plumage coloration and local adaptation in the differentiation of high elevation and high latitude finches. Variation in color and pattern make birds among the most colorful of all vertebrate animals. Plumage color can be an important clue for species recognizing potential mates\, and differences in color might act as a barrier to reproduction. Our presenter Erik Funk will share some of his recent work investigating how differences in coloration contribute to genetic differences in rosy-finches (Leucosticte spp.) and redpoll finches (Acanthis spp.). Erik will describe some specific genes that appear to control plumage color differences and local adaptation\, and the ways in which these traits have influenced the evolution of these two bird groups. \nErik was born and raised in San Diego\, CA where he was introduced early to the birds of the chaparral and coastal sage scrub. Erik began research on birds as an undergraduate at San Diego State University\, continuing on to get his masters degree studying the genetic relationships and evolution of the neotropical tanagers. In 2017 he moved to Colorado where he began a PhD program with Dr. Scott Taylor studying divergence and speciation at the University of Colorado Boulder. Since finishing his degree in 2022\, Erik has worked as a National Science Foundation postdoctoral research fellow studying conservation genomics at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. \nOur February meeting is also time for our annual Death by Chocolate potluck. DESCRIPTION:Grassland birds have suffered an unparalleled decline over the past half century\, stemming from widespread development of North America’s grasslands. This calls for Audubon’s action. To combat the negative effects of grassland degradations—and to keep grass on the landscape—Audubon has developed the Conservation Ranching Initiative. Join us at our March monthly meeting to hear from Chrissy McFarren\, owner\, Director & Ranch Mentor of Badger Creek Ranch as she shares about her conservation work on the ranch. Badger Creek Ranch is the 100th ranch to receive a Bird-Friendly Habitat Certification through Audubon Conservation Ranching. \nChrissy strives to inspire the public about how working lands need all of us and we need these working lands. It is a symbiotic relationship. The lands provide us with beauty\, solace\, freedom\, food\, recreation\, and the ability to help with climate change by sequestering carbon. And\, in return for these gifts\, it’s up to us to roll up our sleeves and get to work in whatever way we can. DESCRIPTION:Join Aiken and Collin Hildreth at Aiken Canyon for an approximately 3-4 hour walk on Sunday\, March 24th.  Meet in the parking lot\, map below. \n\nNamed after ornithologist\, Dr. Charles Aiken\, this is a great destination for birders. Over 100 species have been seen here. Located 16 miles south of Colorado Springs\, these 1\,621-acres are where Aiken raised his herd of sheep. Aiken Canyon is one of the last high-quality examples of the southern Front Range foothills ecosystem. The preserve is composed of a mosaic of habitat types\, including shrub lands\, tall grass prairie meadows\, pinyon juniper woodlands and mixed coniferous woodlands. Then we will drive north to Fountain Creek Regional Park for lunch and walking the park. We should find a nice variety of species and will be looking for early migrants as well as residents. She received her B.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1996\, and her M.S. degree studying white-tailed deer densities and herbivory from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2005. Go west and follow a dirt road across train tracks and turn left in a large dirt road area. Continue forward and turn right through the green gate. Follow the road until it terminates at a parking lot with a picnic area.\n VIEW MEETING PLACE ON GOOGLE MAPS \nThis trip is limited to the first 15 registrations. \nHabitats to bird: Agricultural\, Riparian\nAll-day moderate trip with first half at Clear Springs Ranch Regional Park (east side of I-25 at Exit 123). Then we will drive north to Fountain Creek Regional Park for lunch and walking the park. We should find a nice variety of species and will be looking for early migrants as well as residents. Bring lunch\, snacks\, lots of water\, bug spray\, and sun screen. Expect 4-5 miles of mainly flat land walking. Done by 2:00 p.m.

If time permits\, we’ll walk into Garden of the Gods for birds like White-throated Swifts\, Prairie Falcons\, and Canyon Wren.\n– This will be an easy/moderate hike – We’ll be on relatively flat terrain and may go three miles at a birder’s pace. One short area of trail is somewhat steep.\n– Bring binoculars\, wear good hiking shoes\, and dress for the Colorado Springs forecast.
