SUMMARY:Birding By Book | "Starlings: The Curious Odyssey of a Most Hated Bird"
DESCRIPTION:Birding by Book is a book club for those who love birds AND books! The club meets to discuss selected book titles and create community among birders in the Pikes Peak area. \nRead Starlings: The Curious Odyssey of a Most Hated Bird by Mike Stark at your leisure\, then join us on Monday\, October 19th for book club discussion. \nNamed a 2025 Choice Outstanding Academic Title\nFourth Place for the Arizona Authors Association Literary Award \nHas there ever been a more hated bird than the European starling? Let loose in New York City’s Central Park by a misguided aristocrat\, the starlings were supposed to help curb insect outbreaks and add to the tuneful choir of other songbirds. Rather than staying put\, the dark and speckled starlings marched across the continent like a conquering army. In less than sixty years\, they were in every state in the contiguous United States and their numbers topped two hundred million. Cities came under siege; crops buckled beneath their weight. Public sentiment quickly soured. \nA bitter\, baffling\, and sometimes comical war on starlings ensued. Weapons included dynamite\, guns\, bounties\, fake owls\, real owls\, rubber snakes\, balloons\, itching powder\, and greased building ledges. Still\, artists and scientists marveled at their undulating aerial formations\, which seemed equal parts poetry and mathematics. Keen listeners recognized the starling as one of the world’s great vocal mimics\, imitating everything from fellow birds and cell phones to barking dogs\, car alarms\, and TV commercials. And then there were their undeniable skills of adaptation and survival. What if there was more to these stubborn villains than once thought? \nMike Stark’s Starlings is a first-of-its-kind history of starlings in America\, an oddball\, love-hate story at the intersection of human folly\, ornithology\, and one bird’s tenacious will to endure. \nRoadrunner Bookshop is offering new copies of Starlings: The Curious Odyssey of a Most Hated Bird at a 15% discount to book club members. Please email your request to place an order along with your RSVP. \nSeating is LIMITED\, and a reservation is required.\nRSVP by emailing BirdingByBook@gmail.com. \nphoto credit: University of Nebraska Press

SUMMARY:October Monthly Meeting with Nathan Pieplow
DESCRIPTION:Join Aiken Audubon Society with Nathan Pieplow on Wednesday October 21\, 2026 \nThe Best Bird Sounds You’ve Never Heard\nWhat if I told you that vultures\, shorebirds\, and House Sparrows are some of the most accomplished avian singers in North America? Maybe you’ve never heard them before. Or maybe you’ve never heard them quite this way. This presentation will delve into the surprising world of bird sounds that are hidden\, underappreciated\, and sometimes flat-out denied to exist. You’ll discover the concealed complexity inside a so-called “chirp”; hear the surprising sound of a vulture’s flight display; and learn about many common birds whose song you may have missed\, including singing ducks\, hooting sandpipers\, and wing-clapping owls. Your guide will be Nathan Pieplow\, the author of the Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds\, who will unravel the mysteries of some of the rarest and most startling sounds in his collection after two decades of nature sound recording. \nNathan Pieplow is the author of the Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds\, published in two volumes\, one for Eastern and one for Western North America. An avid bird sound recordist\, he is the author of the bird sound blog Earbirding.com\, a board member of the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies\, an author of the Colorado Birding Trail\, and former editor of the journal Colorado Birds. He is also the co-author (with Katheryn Lumsden) of the middle-grade children’s novel Confessions of a Mango. He teaches writing and rhetoric at the University of Colorado in Boulder. \nThis is an in-person meeting held at the Bear Creek Nature Center\, 245 Bear Creek Rd\, Colorado Springs\, CO\, 80906. NOTE:this is a change from our usual venue. \nIf you would prefer to attend via zoom\, here is the link: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/5770180765?pwd=ZaUy7qRz4askuBDWbOkvv3yaxEmdTH.1&omn=85079933786 \n  \nDoors Open: 6:30pm\nMeeting announcements: 7:00pm\nProgram Presentation: 7:15pm \nphoto by Rich Leche

SUMMARY:November Monthly Meeting:Practical solutions for preventing bird-window collisions at home and in your community
DESCRIPTION:Join Aiken Audubon Society and Kaitlyn Parkins on November 18\, 2026 as she presents via zoom. \nHave you ever heard the unmistakable “thud” of a bird striking a window and rushed to its aid? Or perhaps you’ve come across a stunned bird on the sidewalk? You’re not alone. In the United States\, more than 1 billion birds lose their lives to window collisions annually. The good news? There are effective ways to prevent these tragedies— from simple fixes at home to promoting bird-friendly policies in your area. In this webinar\, American Bird Conservancy’s Kaitlyn Parkins will discuss the reasons behind bird-window collisions\, the most effective strategies for preventing these incidents\, how bird-friendly materials are tested and rated\, and ways to support initiatives for safer\, bird-friendly building designs in your community \nBio: Kaitlyn Parkins\, M.S.\, is the Glass Collisions Program Coordinator at American Bird Conservancy\, where she focuses on reducing bird-window collisions through education\, outreach\, glass testing\, research\, and policy solutions. Her work ranges from helping individuals and communities address collisions at specific buildings to working with architects\, advocates\, and organizations on broader efforts to make buildings safer for birds \nThis is an in-person meeting held at the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Office; 4255 Sinton Road 80907. Our entrance to the building is located on the EAST side (back side) of the building; not the main entrance. Parking is encouraged in the south and west parking lots. \nIf you would prefer to attend via zoom\, here is the link: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/5770180765?pwd=ZaUy7qRz4askuBDWbOkvv3yaxEmdTH.1&omn=85079933786 \nDoors Open: 6:30pm\nMeeting announcements: 7:00pm\nProgram Presentation: 7:15pm
