All Audubon field trips are free unless otherwise stated, and are open to the public. Come join us!

Things you might want to bring: binoculars, spotting scope, ID books, hat, rain gear, sunscreen, bug spray, water, snacks and/or lunch, gas money for the driver, any entry fees, and boundless enthusiasm. And remember, good birders don't wear white!

Please contact the trip leader or listed trip contact for additional information and to let them know you are coming. It's helpful to the leader to know how many participants to expect. Plus, you sure don't want them to leave without you!

In cases of extreme weather conditions, trips may need to be cancelled. If you have any questions about the weather, please contact the trip leader an hour before the scheduled meeting time.

Finding Aiken birders is easy. Just look for the group with funky hats and binoculars pointed at the crows and starlings. Here are directions to some of our regular rendezvous spots:

For trips heading south: Broadmoor Towne Center is northwest of Nevada and Lake Avenue. We typically meet in the parking lot east of Sears and Starbucks (in front of what used to be the AAA office).

For trips heading west: Red Rocks Safeway is at 3275 West Colorado Avenue, at the west end of Old Colorado City. Park near the southeast corner, away from the market.

For trips heading northeast: Falcon Safeway is at 7655 Mclaughlin Road, at the east end of Woodmen Ave. just west of Hwy. 24. We meet on the southwest side, away from the market.

Fountain Creek Nature Center is at 320 Pepper Grass Lane, Fountain. Use exit 132A (Mesa Ridge Pkwy.) off I-25, then exit south on Highway 85/87. Turn west on Cattail Marsh Road and follow to parking area.

Field Trips

Saturday, February 4, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm
Eagles!

Join us for the annual Audubon trip to Pueblo Reservoir in search of our national bird, the Bald Eagle. We will explore back roads in search of Golden Eagles, Ferruginous, Red Tailed and Rough-Legged Hawks, Merlin, Kestrel and Prairie Falcons on the way to Pueblo.

At the Reservoir, we will take some time to enjoy activities at the Division of Wildlife’s and Arkansas Valley Audubon Society’s Eagle Days Celebration: Air Force Academy falcons, rehab bird releases and maybe a visit to the Pueblo Raptor Center.

Please bring a sack lunch and a full tank of gas. We will be outside for short periods with a few short walks if the weather is bearable. A great trip for beginners!

Meet at Broadmoor Towne Center. Contact Gary Conover, 635-2505 for more information. Reservations not required.

Saturday, February 11, 7 am – late afternoon
La Veta Rosy Finches

We will drive down to La Veta and visit a couple of residences in hopes of finding all three species of Rosy-Finches, Pinyon Jay and whatever else is around. Past trips have produced excellent birds!
This trip will offer lots of time to sit and observe bird behavior. Buy lunch in La Veta or pack your own.

Meet at the Park & Ride at Tejon & I-25, under the highway. Contact Debbie Barnes, kfoopooh@yahoo.com, 303.947.0566 if you have any questions and to RSVP.
